Gäsene Dairy - The dairy with the environment at its heart.
In the province of Västergötland, with its stone walls and
red cottages, lies the Gäsene Dairy. Right in the countryside that's called "the
milky meadows," with a bit of poetic fancy.
But this is not poetry, this is real. The dairy is important in the effort to
preserve the ancient cultural landscape of the area. The cows grazing in the
fields and maintaining the open landscape are the dairy's dependable milk
suppliers. And the local farmers, who cut the hay and milk the cows, are the
dairy's proud owners.
The result is an intact landscape and a delicious cheese from Sweden's smallest
dairy association.
The grazing land that belongs to the cows today once belonged to the geese. This
is the origin of the name Gäsene. The first time it is mentioned as a place name
is in the Elder Westrogothic law code, which was written down at the beginning
of the 12th century.
